Nasa’s Mars Exploration Program ‘Perseverance rover’ is on its way to Mars with a speed of 69.980 mph (speed relative to the sun). It will be landing on Mars surface on Feb 18, 2021, after around 8 months of its journey as it launched on July 30, 2020, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The perseverance will be landing at the Mar’s Jezero Crater where dust devil has been spotted by Curiosity Rover Recently. It will explore the Mars surface, Martian climate, sign of ancient life, collect rock samples, and more.
The perseverance rover is an improved version of the Curiosity rover. In fact, they are similar to each other in many ways. The engineers’ team of curiosity has redesigned its wheel more efficiently than curiosity’s wheels (2011 mission) which can sustain more rough and tough surfaces of Mars or even damages to an extent. Perseverance has a thicker wheel and made with Aluminum alloy that is more durable. Moreover, it has a five-jointed robotic arm measuring 6 ft 11 inches long that is capable of uplifting and digging Martian Surface.
The rover has a 45 kg power generator that has the capacity of generating approximately 110 watts of power. It is 14 years of operational life and able to work even in the night, during a dust storm, and through the winter season.
The Rover memory chip contains 128 Megabytes of Volatile DRAM that can be operational at 133 MHz. The flight software (FSW) will be able to use 4 G-Byte of NAND non-volatile memory on a separate card.
The rover will be traveling with a Mars helicopter named ‘Ingenuity’ that is a solar-powered Helicopter drone having 1.8-kilogram mass. It is basically for the flight tests on an extraterrestrial surface. It will be operational for the 30 Mars day period and will be working to find the best driving route for the rover.
Nasa has launched ‘Ingenuity’ to test the first powered flight to Mars? The helicopter will be attached to the belly of Perseverance Rover and will be riding together. It was launched at the same date on July 30, 2020, from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, and will be landing together with Perseverance on Feb 18, 2021, near Jezero Crater, Mars. It will able to take one or more flights with 30 days.
Mars Helicopter is basically a demonstration test of powered flight on the Martian surface, in fact for the first time in another world. Soon it will be landing on the Martian surface and a series of flight tests will be performed over 30 days of Mars day’s duration.
