Life after death is perhaps the most curious question that mankind’s been seeking since it came into existence. Several religious and irreligious theories/beliefs have been winded up, yet it is a mystery that billions of the human minds ask themselves and quest for the answer. Still, we have hardly reached its nearby. All those theories that have been bought out so far about life after death are based on nothing.
However, science went a bit closer to this mystery and tried to explain it with reasonable observations. A world-renowned doctor and director of Critical Care and Resuscitation Research at NYU Langone School of Medicine, Dr. Sam Parnia, explains that the process of death is very comfortable for those who die naturally even if they were in pain before.
The doctor who brought back thousands of patients from the brink of death said that people who have had a near-death experience sometimes explain about encountering deceased relatives, but this can’t be the evidence of the afterlife.
In relation to the physical process, Dr. Sam Parnia said, “death is the process; it’s not a black and white moment. When we are about to die, there is the deduction of oxygen that causes our brain circuit to stop working. And when it happens, we become unconscious to the outside world.”
When our heart stops beating, there is no circulation of blood from the brain to the kidney and liver. And once it happens one loses all his brain reflexes. This is the time when doctors confirm us dead. But there is a mental process even though the heart stops beating, this is what left survivors have a near-death experience and longing for death again.
“Many people around the world claim bizarre things about the afterlife. They claim to see bright light welcoming them after death. They describe seeing their deceased relatives as if they have come to welcome them. They often say that they don’t want to come back to life as they feel that the afterlife is very comfortable and easy. Furthermore, a lot of people who came back from near-death describe watching people around them discussing or mourning while the separation of the soul from the body. They claim to hear the things taking place around them. Some claim to see the review of what they have done throughout their lives.”
Explaining this, Dr. Parnia says, seeing or hearing things near death is not evidence of the afterlife. It is more likely that the brain scans its survival techniques for a few seconds while the heartbeat slow down or stopped; stating that the brain remains active after a few seconds of death. He explains that people in this condition are able to form memories and sense conversations until their brain has shut down and they have completely gone to death.
One such man who had experienced his near-death and watched himself resuscitated provides an accurate and verifiable description of what was happening around him after he lost consciousness. Explaining this, Dr. Parnia said this can be “Conscious awareness” which he believed to have lasted between three to five minutes while there is no brain activity.
In research, it is found that 40% of those who survived a cardiac arrest were aware of the fact that they were clinically dead before their hearts started beating again. Speaking on this, Dr. Parnia said, the pieces of evidence found so far suggest that a few minutes after death, conscience continues to work even though the heart stops beating.
He also added that death doesn’t have to be limited to philosophy and religion, but it can be explored through science. He thanks to modern science and technology that help mankind go nearest to this mystery.
