Mother India (1957)
Directed by Mehboob Khan, this classic movie was the first Indian movie that got nominated for the Oscar. It was nominated for the Best Film in A Foreign Language category. This movie was very close to the Oscar, it just got lost by one vote by Nights Of Cabiria.
An Encounter With Faces (1978)
This film was nominated for the best documentary short subject. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and produced by K. K. Kapil, this movie, based on a group of orphan children, didn’t win the Oscar but it has succeeded to win the Grand Prix award in 1980.
Salaam Bombay (1988)
In 1998, we had Salaam Bombay, and in 2008 we had the movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Both movies have almost the same storyline. It tells the life of people living in a slum area in Mumbai. This movie was well-appreciated by critics worldwide and got the nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film category in Oscar.
Lagaan’s Oscar nomination was the headline in nationwide and worldwide. This Ashutosh Gowariker’s fiction period drama starring Aamir Khan has gained tremendous success nationwide and worldwide at the box office. It was nominated in Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film and lost by only ‘No Man’s Land.
Little Terrorist (2005)
This was nominated for the best live-action short drama. Little terrorist, written, directed and produced by Aswin Kumar, was nominated but fall short to win Oscar.
Note that the film based on India like Slumdog Millionaire and Life of Pi has been succeeded to win the Oscar but both were foreign productions, so we are not considering them in this article.
